E-BooksLife and Work Writers, Readers, and the Conversations between Them

Life and Work Writers, Readers, and the Conversations between Them
Free Download Life and Work: Writers, Readers, and the Conversations between Them By Tim Parks
2016 | 321 Pages | ISBN: 0300215363 | PDF | 2 MB
In this brilliant collection, a renowned critic vividly depicts the dynamic relationships between authors, their work, and their readersAcclaimed novelist and critic Tim Parks has long been fascinated by the complicated relationship between an author's life and work. Dissatisfied with the dominant modes of reading he encountered, he began exploring the underlying values and patterns that guide authors in both their writing and their lives. In a series of provocative, incisive, and unflinching essays written over the past decade and collected for the first time here, he reveals how style and content in a novel reflect a whole pattern of communication and positioning in the author's ordinary and daily behavior. We see how life and work are deeply enmeshed in the work of writers as diverse as Charles Dickens, Feodor Dostoevsky, James Joyce, Anton Chekhov, Philip Roth, Julian Barnes, Peter Stamm, and Geoff Dyer, among others. Parks further shows us how readers' reactions to these writers and their works are inevitably connected to these communicative patterns, establishing a relationship that goes far beyond aesthetic appreciation. This original and daring collection takes us into the psychology of some of our greatest writers and challenges us to see with more clarity how our lives become entangled with theirs through our reading of their novels.

English | 2024 | ISBN: 3031466292 | 370 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 27 MB
This open access book provides a multifold exploration of how people in early modern Europe understood, conducted, and actively used private conversations. From sharing personal matters to discussing delicate secrets, all layers of early modern society had their motives for wanting to keep certain exchanges out of public eyes and ears, and ways of trying to achieve this. Detecting such instances in historical sources typically becomes a complex pursuit, full of subtle references that require creative approaches, especially when it comes to more informal practices. Yet, in a reading against the grain, different sources can offer us hints of how conversations took place in private.

E-BooksDelicious Conversations Reflections on autism, intimacy and communication

Delicious Conversations Reflections on autism, intimacy and communication
Free Download Phoebe Caldwell, "Delicious Conversations: Reflections on autism, intimacy and communication"
English | ISBN: 1908993057 | 2012 | 180 pages | PDF | 5 MB
In Delicious Conversations, Phoebe Caldwell offers us her personal insights into how we can experience intimacy with those on the autistic spectrum, based on years of experience working in the field. The book deals not only with ways of working in a professional context but also takes a more general look at the nature of affective communication and how we can learn to 'read' other people by recognising our subconscious reactions to their body language. Autism is a condition characterised by aloneness, separation and inward focus. Through her compelling reflections Caldwell shows us that by tuning in to our partners' body language we can not only communicate with people with autism but also share an emotional connection, helping to combat the isolating nature of autistic spectrum conditions. Caldwell offers practical advice for ways that we can tap into our intuitive minds and share an intimate connection with our communication partners, building a dialogue that does not rely on speech but makes use of all of our senses. Using examples from her own experience Caldwell emphasises that these techniques can help to alleviate the distress that may be at the route of stereotypic behaviours, by communicating with people on their own terms and in their own 'language'.

E-BooksCorrelating Sobornost Conversations between Karl Barth and the Russian Orthodox Tradition

Correlating Sobornost Conversations between Karl Barth and the Russian Orthodox Tradition
Free Download Correlating Sobornost: Conversations between Karl Barth and the Russian Orthodox Tradition By by Ashley John Moyse (editor) (Author), Scott A. Kirkland;John C. McDowell (Editor)
2016 | 423 Pages | ISBN: 1506410758 | PDF | 2 MB
The diaspora of scholars exiled from Russia in 1922 offered something vital for both Russian Orthodoxy and for ecumenical dialogue. Under new conditions, liberated from scholastic academic discourse, and living and writing in new languages, the scholars set out to reinterpret their traditions and to introduce Russian Orthodoxy to the West. Yet, relatively few have considered the works of these exiles, particularly insofar as they act as critical and constructive conversation partners. This project expands upon the relatively limited conversation between such thinkers with the most significant Protestant theologian of the last century, Karl Barth. Through the topic and in the spirit of sobornost, this project charters such conversation. The body of Russian theological scholarship guided by sobornost challenges Barth, helping us to draw out necessary criticism while leading us toward unexpected insight, and vice versa. Going forward, this volume demonstrates that there is space not only for disagreement and criticism, but also for constructive theological dialogue that generates novel and creative scholarship. Accordingly, this collection will not only illuminate but also stimulate interesting and important discussions for those engaged in the study of Karl Barth's corpus, in the Orthodox tradition, and in the ecumenical discourse between East and West.
