American Melancholy Constructions of Depression in the Twentieth Century
Free Download American Melancholy: Constructions of Depression in the Twentieth Century By Laura D. Hirshbein
2009 | 208 Pages | ISBN: 0813545846 | PDF | 2 MB
As American Melancholy reveals, if you read about depression anywhere today-medical journal, popular magazine, National Institute of Mental Health pamphlet, or pharmaceutical company drug promotional literature--you will find three main pieces of information either explicitly stated or strongly implied: depression is a disease (like any other physical disease); it is extraordinarily prevalent in the world; and it occurs about twice as frequently in women as in men. Yet, depression was not classified as a disease until the 1980 publication of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-III (DSM-III). How is it that such an illness, thought to affect between 14 and 17 million Americans, was not specifically defined until the late twentieth century?American Melancholy traces the growth of depression as an object of medical study and as a consumer commodity and illustrates how and why depression came to be such a huge medical, social, and cultural phenomenon. It is the first book to address gender issues in the construction of depression, explores key questions of how its diagnosis was developed, how it has been used, and how we should question its application in American society.

Researcher Race Social Constructions in the Research Process
Free Download Lauren Mizock, "Researcher Race: Social Constructions in the Research Process "
English | ISBN: 1617356980 | 2012 | 116 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Researcher Race: Social Constructions in the Research Process is designed to expose the role of researcher race in social science research. This book highlights the interaction of researcher and participant race in shaping data that is collected. Researcher Race makes the researcher's position visible via interview excerpts from a qualitative study in order to deconstruct researcher race effects in research. The book includes passages from a qualitative research study with a sample of 20 Black-identified and 20 White-identified participants, as well as a Black researcher and a White researcher. Selections of data from across different researcher-participant racial dyads illustrate how issues of researcher race can arise in research settings. Researcher Race presents the history of racial bias and maltreatment in research. A review of cultural competency theory as it pertains to research is discussed. An overview of narrative research methodology that is used in this study is also provided. Chapters focused on the research data include an exploration of participants' preferences for researcher race; the significance of off-script researcher comments during an interview; and the narratives of traumatic racism among Black and White participants. In the concluding chapter, the book expands conversations about researcher race to consider intersecting aspects of identity in researcher-participant interactions, as well as directions for future research and training. This book can serve as a guide for researchers, as well as students of research, culture, and diversity. Researcher Race: Social Constructions in the Research Process is a valuable tool for researchers interested in expanding awareness of race, oppression, and methodology.

Copilots for Linguists AI, Constructions, and Frames
Free Download Copilots for Linguists: AI, Constructions, and Frames
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1009475908 | 122 Pages | PDF (True) | 3 MB
AI can assist the linguist in doing research on the structure of language. This Element illustrates this possibility by showing how a conversational AI based on a Large Language Model (AI LLM chatbot) can assist the Construction Grammarian, and especially the Frame Semanticist. An AI LLM chatbot is a text-generation system trained on vast amounts of text. To generate text, it must be able to find patterns in the data and mimic some linguistic capacity, at least in the eyes of a cooperative human user. The authors do not focus on whether AIs "understand" language. Rather, they investigate whether AI LLM chatbots are useful tools for linguists. They reframe the discussion from what AI LLM chatbots can do with language to what they can do for linguists. They find that a chatty LLM can labor usefully as an eliciting interlocutor, and present precise, scripted routines for prompting conversational LLMs.

Made in the Margins Latinao Constructions of US Religious History (New Perspectives on Latinao Religion)
Free Download Made in the Margins: Latina/o Constructions of US Religious History (New Perspectives on Latina/o Religion) by Hjamil A. Mart
English | March 15, 2013 | ISBN: 1602581991 | 200 pages | PDF | 1.26 Mb
Though the writing of US religious history has become increasingly open to new voices, Hjamil A. Martínez-Vázquez argues that those voices have yet to challenge effectively the dominant Eurocentric historical perspective. In this first Latina/o American religious historiography, Martínez-Vázquez critiques the traditional narrative not for what it says, but for what it does not say. Made in the Margins considers the ways in which traditional historiography has favored a specific understanding of US religious history and offers a new method of constructing Latina/o histories as "subaltern." And, in so doing, Made in the Margins ably begins the necessary conversation about truly doing history from within previously marginalized communities and disciplines.

First published in 1990, The Ethnographic Imagination explores how sociologists use literary and rhetorical conventions to convey their findings and arguments, and to 'persuade' their colleagues and students of the authenticity of their accounts. Looking at selected sociological texts in the light of contemporary social theory, the author analyses how their arguments are constructed and illustrated, and gives many new insights into the literary convention of realism and factual accounts.
