From acclaimed novelist and cultural historian Ruth Brandon comes a captivating dual biography of the legendary founders of the cosmetics industry, Helena Rubinstein and Eugène Schueller, creator of L'Oréal. Brandon's gripping and sometimes disturbing story of gender, power, and politics stretches back from the darkest days of World War II, to the emergence of the modern fashion and makeup industries, with magazines such as Vogue and Cosmopolitan and game-changing product lines such as Avon and Mary Kay. Ugly Beauty resonates as well with its implications for modern culture, as we enter an era when haute couture and cosmetology exert an ever more powerful influence upon society at large.

E-BooksThe Computational Beauty of Nature Computer Explorations of Fractals, Chaos, Complex Systems, and Adaptation

The Computational Beauty of Nature Computer Explorations of Fractals, Chaos, Complex Systems, and Adaptation
Free Download The Computational Beauty of Nature: Computer Explorations of Fractals, Chaos, Complex Systems, and Adaptation By Gary William Flake
1998 | 493 Pages | ISBN: 0262062003 | PDF | 35 MB
"This book is a delight."-- Barak Pearlmutter, University of New Mexico "This delightful book illustrates beautifully the paradigm shift in physics from writing equations and solving them to computer modeling and experimentation."-- Greg Chaitin, author of "The Limits of Mathematics" "Simulation, " writes Gary Flake in his preface, "becomes a form of experimentation in a universe of theories. The primary purpose of this book is to celebrate this fact."In this book, Gary William Flake develops in depth the simple idea that recurrent rules can produce rich and complicated behaviors. Distinguishing "agents" (e.g., molecules, cells, animals, and species) from their interactions (e.g., chemical reactions, immune system responses, sexual reproduction, and evolution), Flake argues that it is the computational properties of interactions that account for much of what we think of as "beautiful" and "interesting." From this basic thesis, Flake explores what he considers to be today's four most interesting computational topics: fractals, chaos, complex systems, and adaptation. Each of the book's parts can be read independently, enabling even the casual reader to understand and work with the basic equations and programs. Yet the parts are bound together by the theme of the computer as a laboratory and a metaphor for understanding the universe. The inspired reader will experiment further with the ideas presented to create fractal landscapes, chaotic systems, artificial life forms, genetic algorithms, and artificial neural networks.

English | ISBN: 1636671551 | 2023 | 120 pages | EPUB, PDF | 1196 KB + 1087 KB
Drawing on Hegel's model of aesthetics and beauty to analyze the Star Trek franchise, this book puts justice at the center of the "beauty"-and entertainment value-of popular culture. The author, George A. Gonzalez, shows that Description-revolving around justice and injustice-often determines the artistic success and popularity of TV and films. He argues that Star Trek is the most popular franchise in history because it puts the pursuit of justice, and therefore beauty, at the heart of its world.

Sharing Poetic Expressions Beauty, Sublime, Mysticism in Islamic and Occidental Culture (2024)

English | 2011 | pages: 246 | ISBN: 9400707592, 9400736010 | PDF | 3,0 mb
A world ever more extensively interlinked is calling out for serving human interests broader and more compelling than those inspiring our technological welfare. The interface between cultures - at the moment especially between the Occident and Islam - presents challenges to mutual understandings and calls for restoring the resources of our human beings forgotten in the struggle of competition and rivalry at the vital spheres of existence. In the evolutionary progress of the living beings the strictly vital concerns, emotions, attributes become sublimed and elevated to the spiritual sphere at which human beings encounter each other and share. Studies presented here bring forth sublimity, generosity, forgiveness, beauty, and are exalting the quest after ciphers and symbols which lead to our sharing the common deepest stream of fraternal reality.

E-BooksBeauty, Reason, and Power Music Education in a Pluralist Society

Beauty, Reason, and Power Music Education in a Pluralist Society
Free Download William M. Perrine, "Beauty, Reason, and Power: Music Education in a Pluralist Society"
English | ISBN: 1433199122 | 2023 | 372 pages | EPUB, PDF | 3 MB + 36 MB
Music, when approached as a part of a classical liberal arts education, is a profoundly humanizing endeavor which can facilitate individual musical and moral growth within communities of practice. A classical approach to music education contrasts with common progressive and critical curriculum frameworks through a philosophically realist analysis. From this perspective, a classical education serves as an induction into the liberal arts as a living tradition of cultural memory rooted in the transcendentals of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty. Further, because a classical liberal arts education is an education in virtue, it equips students to contribute to the common good as a member of their broader communities. Music education, as part of a classical education, can cultivate shared loves across political, religious, or cultural lines in a pluralist society. Studying music allows practitioners to expand the circle of internal goods of a musical tradition while respecting existing individual and community moral commitments. Students learn music classically through ethical apprenticeship, a foundational method of induction into existing musical traditions which draws its pedagogical authority from both the internal standards of the craft and the practice's hierarchical relation to an external moral order. Music education ultimately contributes to the life well lived when it reflects a narrative unity encompassing myth and reason, lived virtuously through the mastery of desire as measured by normative standards that are intrinsically meaningful beyond the limitations of the self.

E-BooksThe Algorithmic Beauty of Seaweeds, Sponges and Corals

The Algorithmic Beauty of Seaweeds, Sponges and Corals
Free Download The Algorithmic Beauty of Seaweeds, Sponges and Corals by Jaap A. Kaandorp , Janet E. Kübler
English | PDF (True) | 2001 | 206 Pages | ISBN : 3540677003 | 27.8 MB
This book gives a state-of-the-art overview of modeling growth and form of marine sessile organisms - such as stromatolites, algae, and metazoans including stony corals, hydrocorals, octocorals, and sponges -, using large-scale computing techniques, scientific visualization, methods for analyzing 2D and 3D forms, and particle-based modeling techniques. It originates from the workshop on Modeling Growth and Form of Marine Sessile Organisms, held at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, Santa Barbara, California, August 1999. Experts from various disciplines including developmental biology, ecology, computer science, physics and mathematics, who have research interests in modeling the development of these organisms have been invited to contribute. The book describes all the steps required to develop and experimentally validate morphological models including collecting biological information and methods for specifying and comparing forms. Examples are given of how models are currently being applied to simulate growth and form of marine sessile organisms. Potential applications of growth models and morphological analyses in modern and paleo-bio-monitoring, the detection of environmental change, and the conservation and restoration of marine ecosystems and aquaculture are addressed. The combination of simulation models with laboratory and field experiments provides a powerful tool to obtain insights on how the growth forms of marine organisms emerge from physical, genetic and environmental influences.
