Fannie Barrier Williams Crossing the Borders of Region and Race
Wanda A. Hendricks, "Fannie Barrier Williams: Crossing the Borders of Region and Race"
English | 2013 | ISBN: 0252079590 | PDF | pages: 257 | 2.0 mb
Born shortly before the Civil War, activist and reformer Fannie Barrier Williams (1855-1944) became one of the most prominent educated African American women of her generation. Hendricks shows how Williams became "raced" for the first time in early adulthood, when she became a teacher in Missouri and Washington, D.C., and faced the injustices of racism and the stark contrast between the lives of freed slaves and her own privileged upbringing in a western New York village.

E-BooksThe Great Barrier Reef The History of the World's Largest Coral Reef

The Great Barrier Reef The History of the World's Largest Coral Reef
The Great Barrier Reef: The History of the World's Largest Coral Reef by Charles River Editors
English | March 3, 2015 | ISBN: 1508676747 | 63 pages | EPUB | 2.46 Mb
*Includes pictures *Includes accounts of the reef and animals written by explorers *Includes a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents "Coral is a very beautiful and unusual animal. Each coral head consists of thousand of individual polyps. These polyps are continually budding and branching into genetically identical neighbors." - Antony Garrett List People have always loved to build things, whether it's a feat of engineering in an underground subway or the construction of the world's tallest skyscraper. Thus, it's somewhat ironic that the largest structure ever built was not made by humans but by incredibly tiny organisms known as coral polyps. Over the course of tens of thousands of years, these small organisms have put together a collection of nearly 3,000 reefs that form a collective stretching across 130,000 square miles. It is often mistakenly claimed that the Great Wall of China can be seen in space, but it's absolutely true that the enormous Great Barrier Reef is visible. The sheer size of the Great Barrier Reef is mind-boggling, but its importance extends far past its physical extent. Put simply, the Great Barrier Reef is one of the most beautiful spots on the planet, offering kaleidoscopic colors thanks to the coral and the species that call it home. This is understandable because a staggering number of species inhabit the Great Barrier Reef, ranging from starfish and turtles to alligators and birds. Scientists have counted about 1,500 different fish species using the reef, and it's estimated that even 1.5 million birds use the site. In designating it a World Heritage Site, UNESCO wrote of the Great Barrier Reef, "The Great Barrier Reef is a site of remarkable variety and beauty on the north-east coast of Australia. It contains the world's largest collection of coral reefs, with 400 types of coral, 1,500 species of fish and 4,000 types of mollusc. It also holds great scientific interest as the habitat of species such as the dugong ('sea cow') and the large green turtle, which are threatened with extinction." Unfortunately, an ecosystem as complex as the Great Barrier Reef is also vulnerable to a host of threats, whether it's fishing, oil spills, or climate change. J.E.N. Veron, former chief scientist of the Australian Institute of Marine Science, described watching how coral was affected during what's known as a mass bleaching event: "And then I saw a whammy, a mass bleaching event ... where everything turns white and dies. Sometimes it's only the fast-growing branching corals, but some of the others are horrible to see; corals that are four, five, six hundred years old-they die, too... It's real, day in, day out, and I work on this, day in, day out. It's like seeing a house on fire in slow motion...There's a fire to end all fires, and you're watching it in slow motion, and you have been for years." In fact, scientists fear that the Great Barrier Reef has lost most of its coral cover in the last 30 years, which poses a danger to the species that inhabit it, some of which are already endangered. The Great Barrier Reef: The History of the World's Largest Coral Reef looks at the history of the reef and describes it in vivid detail. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about the Great Barrier Reef like never before, in no time at all.

E-BooksPlastic Packaging Materials for Food Barrier Function, Mass Transport, Quality Assurance, and Legislation

Plastic Packaging Materials for Food Barrier Function, Mass Transport, Quality Assurance, and Legislation
Plastic Packaging Materials for Food: Barrier Function, Mass Transport, Quality Assurance, and Legislation By
2000 | 595 Pages | ISBN: 3527288686 | PDF | 19 MB
Plastics have developed into the most important class of packaging materials. Their relative impermeability for substances from the surroundings has great influence on the shelf life and the quality of the packed goods. At the same time the interaction between the contents and the various components of the packaging plays a decisive role. This particular book is indispensable in the search for the optimal plastic packaging. It facilitates the estimation of the influence on the goods which come from the surroundings and from the packaging. The authors do not restrict themselves only to the description of the phenomena of diffusion or transport in theory, but they show what they mean for practical applications. Food represents the central theme as main area of application for plastic packaging. It can be considered to be the "model substance" and the findings are to be applied to many other products and systems. The main rules and regulations for food packaging of the European Community and the United States are presented in this book. Furthermore the authors emphasize the testing methods for proving the mass transport and the sensory check of the quality of the products. Content: Chapter 1 Preservation of quality through packaging (pages 1-8): Albert L. Baner and Otto PiringerChapter 2 Characteristics of plastic materials (pages 9-45): Johannes Brandsch and Otto PiringerChapter 3 Additives for plastics and their transformation products (pages 47-77): Jan Pospisil and Stanislav NespurekChapter 4 Partition coefficients (pages 79-123): Albert L. BanerChapter 5 Models for diffusion in polymers (pages 125-157): Peter MerceaChapter 6 Prediction of diffusion coefficients in gases, liquids, amorphous solids and plastic materials using an uniform model (pages 159-181): Otto PiringerChapter 7 Transport equations and their solutions (pages 183-219): Otto PiringerChapter 8 Numerical solutions of the diffusion equation (pages 221-238): Titus A. BeuChapter 9 Permeation of gases, water vapor and volatile organic compounds (pages 239-285): Otto PiringerChapter 10 Migration of plastic constituents (pages 287-357): Roland FranzChapter 11 Migration from food packaging: Regulatory considerations for estimating exposure (pages 359-392): Timothy H. BegleyChapter 12 European Community legislation on materials and articles intended to come into contact with food (pages 393-406): Luigi RossiChapter 13 Sensory problems caused by food and packaging interactions (pages 407-426): Otto Piringer and Monika RuterChapter 14 Case study: styrene monomer migration into dairy products in single serve portion packs (pages 427-443): Albert L. BanerChapter 15 Possibilities and limitations of migration modeling (pages 445-468): Johannes Brandsch, Peter Mercea and Otto Piringer

Recurring extreme events of nature challenge disaster-prone settlements in complex ways. Devastating property damages are one of the tests of survival for such settlements in both economic and social terms. It also provides unique opportunities to rethink the environment cleared by massive natural disasters. However, rebuilding for long-term resiliency is one of the least investigated areas, particularly when employing tacit knowledge in the sustainable recovery process.
