E-BooksMachiavelli in the Spanish–Speaking Atlantic World, 1880–1940 Liberal and Anti–Liberal Political Thought

Machiavelli in the Spanish–Speaking Atlantic World, 1880–1940 Liberal and Anti–Liberal Political Thought
Free Download Leandro Losada, "Machiavelli in the Spanish-Speaking Atlantic World, 1880-1940: Liberal and Anti-Liberal Political Thought "
English | ISBN: 1399515357 | 2023 | 272 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Combining historiography and political theory, this book compares different strands of Machiavelli's reception in South and North America, and between Hispanic America and Spain. It provides new insight into Machiavelli's writings and how they have been read in different contexts. The book analyses these readings focusing on some specific themes including: the relationship between politics and morals; the links between political power and freedom; debates about political realism; reflections on liberalism and republicanism; and conceptions of time and history. The book argues that Machiavelli had a significant impact on both liberal and anti-liberal authors from Argentina and Spain. For liberals, he represented a synonym of tyranny but also, in opposite way, he had offered a synthesis between republicanism and liberalism. For anti-liberals, he was associated with Modernity and liberalism.

E-BooksLourenço da Silva Mendonça and the Black Atlantic Abolitionist Movement in the Seventeenth Century

Lourenço da Silva Mendonça and the Black Atlantic Abolitionist Movement in the Seventeenth Century
Free Download José Lingna Nafafé, "Lourenço da Silva Mendonça and the Black Atlantic Abolitionist Movement in the Seventeenth Century "
English | ISBN: 1108838235 | 2022 | 377 pages | PDF | 9 MB
This groundbreaking study tells the story of the highly organised, international legal court case for the abolition of slavery spearheaded by Prince Lourenço da Silva Mendonça in the seventeenth century. The case, presented before the Vatican, called for the freedom of all enslaved people and other oppressed groups. This included New Christians (Jews converted to Christianity) and Indigenous Americans in the Atlantic World, and Black Christians from confraternities in Angola, Brazil, Portugal and Spain. Abolition debate is generally believed to have been dominated by white Europeans in the eighteenth century. By centring African agency, José Lingna Nafafé offers a new perspective on the abolition movement, showing, for the first time, how the legal debate was begun not by Europeans, but by Africans. In the first book of its kind, Lingna Nafafé underscores the exceptionally complex nature of the African liberation struggle, and demystifies the common knowledge and accepted wisdom surrounding African slavery.

Abyssal Channels in the Atlantic Ocean Water Structure and Flows (2024)
Free Download Eugene G. Morozov, Alexander N. Demidov, Roman Y. Tarakanov, "Abyssal Channels in the Atlantic Ocean: Water Structure and Flows"
English | 2010 | pages: 282 | ISBN: 9048193575, 9400790279 | PDF | 18,0 mb
This book is dedicated to the study of structure and transport of deep and bottom waters above and through underwater channels of the Atlantic Ocean. The study is based on recent observations, analysis of historical data, and literature reviews. This approach allows us to understand how water transport and water mass prop- ties have changed over the last years and decades. The focus of our study is on the propagation of bottom waters in the Atlantic Ocean based on new field data at key points. At the end of the 1920s, the first integral study of water masses and bottom topography of the Central and South Atlantic was carried out from the German - search vessel Meteor. This German Atlantic Expedition was one of the first cruises equipped with the newly developed echo sounder (fathometer): an obligatory p- requisite for the investigation of bottom morphology in the deep sea on an - erational base. The results of the expedition were published by Wüst, Defant, and colleagues in the multivolume METEOR publication series starting with the cruise report by the ship's commander (Spiess 1928, 1932). Historically, this series of p- lications, intermittently interrupted by World War II, was the basis for many years of research into the development of modern concepts about Atlantic water masses and their circulation schemes.

Firsting in the Early–Modern Atlantic World
Free Download Lauren Beck, "Firsting in the Early-Modern Atlantic World "
English | ISBN: 0367334682 | 2019 | 268 pages | PDF | 4 MB
For centuries, historians have narrated the arrival of Europeans using terminology (discovery, invasion, conquest, and colonization) that emphasizes their agency and disempowers that of Native Americans. This book explores firsting, a discourse that privileges European and settler-colonial presence, movements, knowledges, and experiences as a technology of colonization in the early modern Atlantic world, 1492-1900. It exposes how textual culture has ensured that Euro-settlers dominate Native Americans, while detailing misrepresentations of Indigenous peoples as unmodern and proposing how the western world can be un-firsted in scholarship on this time and place.
