Poetries – Politics A Celebration of Language, Art, and Learning
Free Download Jenevieve DeLosSantos, "Poetries - Politics: A Celebration of Language, Art, and Learning"
English | ISBN: 1978832710 | 2023 | 276 pages | PDF | 49 MB
Poetries - Politics: A Celebration of Language, Art, and Learning celebrates the best of innovative humanities pedagogy and creative graphic design. Designed and implemented during a time of political divisiveness, the Poetries - Politics project created a space of inviting, multilingual walls on the Rutgers campus, celebrating diversity, community, and cross-cultural exchange. This book, like the original project, provides a platform for the incredible generative power of student-led work. Essays feature the perspectives of three students and professors originally involved in the project, reflecting on their learning and exploring the works they selected for the original exhibition. The essays lead to a beautifully illustrated catalogue of the original student designs.

English | ISBN: 1350073830 | 2023 | 242 pages | EPUB | 4 MB
Metaphor, which allows us to talk about things by comparing them to other things, is one of the most ubiquitous and adaptable features of language and thought. It allows us to clarify meaning, yet also evaluate and transform the ways we think, create and act. While we are alert to metaphor in spoken or written texts, it has, within the visual arts, been critically overlooked. Taking into consideration how metaphors are inventively embodied in the formal, technical, and stylistic aspects of visual artworks, Mark Staff Brandl shows how extensively artists rely on creative metaphor within their work. Exploring the work of a broad variety of artists - including Dawoud Bey, Dan Ramirez, Gaëlle Villedary, Raoul Deal, Sonya Clark, Titus Kaphar, Charles Boetschi, and more- he argues that metaphors are the foundation of visual thought, are chiefly determined by bodily and environmental experiences, and are embodied in artistic form. Visual artistic creation is philosophical thought. By grounding these arguments in the work of philosophers and cultural theorists, including Noël Carroll, Hans Georg Gadamer, and George Lakoff, Brandl shows how important metaphor is to understanding contemporary art.

Material Modernity Innovations in Art, Design, and Architecture in the Weimar Republic
Free Download Deborah Ascher Barnstone, "Material Modernity: Innovations in Art, Design, and Architecture in the Weimar Republic "
English | ISBN: 1350228737 | 2022 | 272 pages | EPUB | 10 MB
Material Modernity explores creative innovation in German art, design, and architecture during the Weimar Republic, charting both the rise of new media and the re-fashioning of old media. Weimar became famous for the explosion of creative ingenuity across the arts in Germany, due to experiments with new techniques (including the move towards abstraction in painting and sculpture) and inventive work in such new media as paper and plastic, which utilized both new and old methods of art production. Individual chapters in this book consider inventions such as the camera and materials like celluloid, examine the role of new materials including concrete composites in opening up fresh avenues in the plastic arts, and relate advances in the understanding of color perception and psychology to an increased interest in visual perception and the latent potential of color as both architectural ornament and carrier of emotional force in space.

Grey on Grey At the Threshold of Philosophy and Art
Free Download Kamini Vellodi, "Grey on Grey: At the Threshold of Philosophy and Art "
English | ISBN: 1474478514 | 2023 | 480 pages | PDF | 4 MB
Taking off from Hegel's invocation of philosophy as a painting of 'grey on grey', this collection of essays explores the rich scope of possibilities implicated by the colour and concept of grey. Crossing art history, visual studies, philosophy, anthropology and literary studies, contributions attest to the repetitious insistence of grey on grey in rethinking the ontology of artworks and images; concepts of time, technique and medium; and how its immanent logic of self-differing summons forth deadlocks and blind spots, both past and present.
