English | ISBN: 9463729615 | 2023 | 308 pages | PDF | 2 MB
This book situates Alfred the Great in his hagiographic context. For 150 years, the fables told in the ninth century about Alfred's childhood have posed interlocking disciplinary challenges to historians committed to evicting romance from history. Blending current Hagiography Studies with historical, literary, and biblical hermeneutics can help us forgo the anti-hagiographic commitments which motivated the scholars who purified the Victorian cult of Alfred by expunging his legends and salvaging his historicity. The book focusses on the typological functions of three Alfredian fables from the Old English Chronicle, the Old English Boethius, and Asser's Vita Ælfredi, analyses the Description common to all three, critiques the psychological conjecture that Alfred's childhood memory was their common source, and shows that synoptically they can help us see how Alfred shaped the curve of his own life's destiny and how he engaged in the formation of his own cult to last a thousand years.

2000 | 225 Pages | ISBN: 0853239169 | PDF | 3 MB
Annotation. "The focus of The Pataphysician's Library is the enigmatic list of books termed the livres pairs which appears in Alfred Jarry's novel Gestes et Opinions du docteur Faustroll, pataphysicien, completed in 1898. The list includes well-known books and more obscure works, but the greatest interest of the livres pairs lies in the light they throw on the vibrant and experimental atmosphere in which Jarry and his contemporaries worked. Several of Jarry's friends, such as Leon Bloy, Gustave Kahn, Stephane Mallarme, Rachilde and Henri de Regnier feature in the novel, as the rulers of islands visited by the pataphysician Faustroll in his curious voyage around Paris. For the purposes of the voyage, Faustroll reduces each livre pair to its essence; these are often indicative of Jarry's approach to the texts. The second part of the book examines some of the central themes of Symbolist writing as revealed in Jarry's collection of livres pairs." "Jarry is best known as the precursor of the Theatre of the Absurd with his play Ubu Roi, staged in 1896, but this study shows how his prose work relates to contemporary trends and gives a fascinating picture of the French literary avant-garde at the fin-de-siecle."--BOOK JACKET. In the Context of His Times Alfred Dreyfus as Lover, Intellectual, Poet, and Jew
Free Download Norman Simms, "In the Context of His Times: Alfred Dreyfus as Lover, Intellectual, Poet, and Jew "
English | ISBN: 1618112368 | 2013 | 350 pages | PDF | 2 MB
From the very moment Alfred Dreyfus was placed under arrest for treason and espionage, his entire world was turned upside down, and for the next five years he lived in what he called a phantasmagoria. To keep himself sane, Dreyfus wrote letters to and received letters from his wife Lucie and exercised his intellect through reading the few books and magazines his censors allowed him, writing essays on these and other texts he had read in the past, and working out problems in mathematics, physics, and chemistry. He practiced his English and created strange drawings his prison wardens called architectural or kabbalistic signs. In this volume, Norman Simms explores how Dreyfus kept himself from exploding into madness by reading his essays carefully, placing them in the context of his century, and extrapolating from them the hidden recesses of the Jewish Alsatian background he shared with the Dreyfus family and Lucie Hadamard.

E-BooksAlfred Schutz, Phenomenology, and the Renewal of Interpretive Social Science

Alfred Schutz, Phenomenology, and the Renewal of Interpretive Social Science
Free Download Besnik Pula, "Alfred Schutz, Phenomenology, and the Renewal of Interpretive Social Science "
English | ISBN: 1032609168 | 2024 | 230 pages | EPUB | 3 MB
In recent decades, the historical social sciences have moved away from deterministic perspectives and increasingly embraced the interpretive analysis of historical process and social and political change. This shift has enriched the field but also led to a deadlock regarding the meaning and status of subjective knowledge. Cultural interpretivists struggle to incorporate subjective experience and the body into their understanding of social reality. In the early twentieth century, philosopher Alfred Schutz grappled with this very issue. Drawing on Edmund Husserl's phenomenology and Max Weber's historical sociology, Schutz pioneered the interpretive analysis of social life from an embodied perspective. However, the recent interpretivist turn, influenced by linguistic philosophies, discourse theory, and poststructuralism, has overlooked the insights of Schutz and other phenomenologists. This book revisits Schutz's phenomenology and social theory, positioning them against contemporary problems in social theory and interpretive social science research. The book extends Schutz's key concepts of relevance, symbol relations, theory of language, and lifeworld meaning structures. It outlines Schutz's critical approach to the social distribution of knowledge and develops his nascent sociology and political economy of knowledge. This book will appeal to readers with interests in social theory, phenomenology, and the methods of interpretive social science, including historical sociology, cultural sociology, science and technology studies, political economy, and international relations.

E-BooksClassical Myth in Four Films of Alfred Hitchcock

Classical Myth in Four Films of Alfred Hitchcock
Free Download Mark William Padilla, "Classical Myth in Four Films of Alfred Hitchcock"
English | ISBN: 1498529151 | 2016 | 336 pages | EPUB | 20 MB
Classical Myth in Four Films of Alfred Hitchcock presents an original study of Alfred Hitchcock by considering how his classics-informed London upbringing marks some of his films. The Catholic and Irish-English Hitchcock (1899-1980) was born to a mercantile family and attended a Jesuit college preparatory, whose curriculum featured Latin and classical humanities. An important expression of Edwardian culture at-large was an appreciation for classical ideas, texts, images, and myth. Mark Padilla traces the ways that Hitchcock's films convey mythical themes, patterns, and symbols, though they do not overtly reference them. Hitchcock was a modernist who used myth in unconscious ways as he sought to tell effective stories in the film medium. This book treats four representative films, each from a different decade of his early career. The first two movies were produced in London: The Farmer's Wife (1928) and The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934); the second two in Hollywood: Rebecca (1940) and Strangers on a Train (1951). In close readings of these movies, Padilla discusses myths and literary texts such as the Judgment of Paris, The Homeric Hymn to Demeter, Aristophanes's Frogs, Apuleius's tale "Cupid and Psyche," Homer's Odyssey, and The Homeric Hymn to Hermes. Additionally, many Olympian deities and heroes have archetypal resonances in the films in question. Padilla also presents a new reading of Hitchcock's circumstances as he entered film work in 1920 and theorizes why and how the films may be viewed as an expression of the classical tradition and of classical reception.
