Assessing the Reliability of Complex Models Mathematical and Statistical Foundations of Verification, Validation, and U
Free Download National Research Council, "Assessing the Reliability of Complex Models: Mathematical and Statistical Foundations of Verification, Validation, and U"
English | ISBN: 0309256348 | 2012 | 144 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Advances in computing hardware and algorithms have dramatically improved the ability to simulate complex processes computationally. Today's simulation capabilities offer the prospect of addressing questions that in the past could be addressed only by resource-intensive experimentation, if at all. Assessing the Reliability of Complex Models recognizes the ubiquity of uncertainty in computational estimates of reality and the necessity for its quantification.

E-BooksAssessing Pragmatic Competence in the Japanese EFL Context Towards the Learning of Listener Responses

Assessing Pragmatic Competence in the Japanese EFL Context Towards the Learning of Listener Responses
Free Download Pino Cutrone, "Assessing Pragmatic Competence in the Japanese EFL Context: Towards the Learning of Listener Responses"
English | ISBN: 1443846066 | 2013 | 375 pages | PDF | 2 MB
With a focus on intercultural communication between Japanese and Americans, this book describes how differing listening styles and conversational behaviours across cultures can negatively influence intercultural communication. Responding to the many calls for studies examining the teachability of listener responses in the language classroom, the author investigates whether listener responses would be a suitable target for instruction in the EFL/ESL classroom, and, if so, what instructional methods are best suited to teaching this elusive aspect of pragmatic competence. By addressing these issues, this book provides exciting and novel insights into various aspects of applied linguistics. By supplementing language data and questionnaires with retrospective and longitudinal research techniques, the author is able to present a much richer description and deeper understanding of how and why participants used listener responses in the manner they did. With the findings supporting an explicit approach to teaching listener responses, this book provides language practitioners with a direction in which to move forward. Beyond this practical application, this study sheds new light into such theoretical debates as the role of consciousness in language teaching (the Explicit vs. Implicit debate), the universality of Grice s theory of conversation and the potentially differing conceptualisations of politeness across cultures.

E-BooksAssessing Measurement Invariance for Applied Research

Assessing Measurement Invariance for Applied Research
Free Download Craig S. Wells, "Assessing Measurement Invariance for Applied Research "
English | ISBN: 1108485227 | 2021 | 250 pages | PDF | 6 MB
This book focuses on the practical application of statistical techniques for assessing measurement invariance with less emphasis on theoretical development or exposition. Instead, it describes the methods using a pedagogical framework followed by extensive illustrations that demonstrate how to use software to analyze real data. The chapters illustrate the practical methods to assess measurement invariance and shows how to apply them to a range of data. The computer syntax and data sets used in this book are available for download here: people.umass.edu/cswells.

E-BooksAssembling Identities

Assembling Identities
Free Download Sam Wiseman, "Assembling Identities"
English | ISBN: 144386529X | 2014 | 260 pages | PDF | 1207 KB
This collection of sixteen essays, drawn from across the arts, humanities and social sciences, represents a cross-disciplinary exploration of some of the ways in which identities - whether of individuals, communities, or nations - are constructed, maintained and contested. It is introduced by the editor, Sam Wiseman, with a preface by Regenia Gagnier, and the essays are subdivided into four sections: Performative Identities; British Identities; Ethnic, Bodily and Sexual Identities; and Visuality, Technology and Identity. The contributors are scholars working throughout the UK and beyond, in subjects including English Literature, Cultural Studies, Music, History, Theology, Media Studies, Social Anthropology, Digital Arts, Philosophy and Visual Culture. Key loci of identity covered include class, nationality, ethnicity, gender, sexuality and religion; some of the sites and behaviours of identity formation examined include performativity, technology and the body. Collectively, these essays emphasize the invariable ambiguity and instability of identity. It is never a static concept: identities are in a state of ceaseless change, as they respond (on both individual and collective levels) to pressures and influences from institutions, ideologies and material conditions. The disciplinary diversity of Assembling Identities promotes the discovery of new, unexpected perspectives and connections for readers in their thinking about identity, with unforeseen parallels emerging between diverse places, periods and socio-cultural locations.

Asleep at the Switch The Political Economy of Federal Research and Development Policy since 1960 (Carleton Library Seri
Free Download Bruce Smardon, "Asleep at the Switch: The Political Economy of Federal Research and Development Policy since 1960 (Carleton Library Seri"
English | ISBN: 0773544275 | 2014 | 504 pages | EPUB | 1284 KB
Since 1960, Canadian industry has lagged behind other advanced capitalist economies in its level of commitment to research and development. Asleep at the Switch explains the reasons for this underperformance, despite a series of federal measures to spur technological innovation in Canada. Bruce Smardon argues that the underlying issue in Canada's longstanding failure to innovate is structural, and can be traced to the rapid diffusion of American Fordist practices into the manufacturing sector of the early twentieth century. Under the influence of Fordism, Canadian industry came to depend heavily on outside sources of new technology, particularly from the United States. Though this initially brought in substantial foreign capital and led to rapid economic development, the resulting branch-plant industrial structure led to the prioritization of business interests over transformative and innovative industrial strategies. This situation was exacerbated in the early 1960s by the Glassco framework, which assumed that the best way for the federal state to foster domestic technological capacity was to fund private sector research and collaborative strategies with private capital. Remarkably, and with few results, federal programs and measures continued to emphasize a market-oriented approach. Asleep at the Switch details the ongoing attempts by the federal government to increase the level of innovation in Canadian industry, but shows why these efforts have failed to alter the pattern of technological dependency.
